Feeling: Intrigued and Excited

I love reading alternative (and controversial) views on generally accepted ideas. Add to those an intriguing mystery, a few dead bodies, numerous assassination attempts and a conspiracy theory, and I am a happy reader.  :)  Regardless of your opinion on global warming, Michael Crichton writes a darn good story.  Not a light read, State of Fear is admittedly heavy on the supporting facts and science, but I found myself so intrigued by the tale that I didn't stop reading.

In other news, I'm heading out west to the Surrey International Writers' Conference.  It'll be my second year attending, and I highly recommend it.  Authors, editors, publishers and agents provide insight into the craft of writing, the business of publishing, their own experiences, and the love/insanity of it all.  So much information and advice, a great networking opportunity, and incredibly fun.  There's nothing quite like spending days with people who get it, who understand what it's like to live with this passion for the written word.  Plus I get to visit my sister while I'm out there.  *\o/*

Currently working on: Preparing Thanksgiving dinner Feeling: Fantastic! Eldest son is home for the weekend, and it's a gorgeous, sunny fall day outside - perfect for our annual family hike. In other news, it's that time of year again. Not Thanksgiving, but NaNo. Well, technically it's not time to write yet, but it is time to get ready for it. Anyone else out there taking the plunge? This will be my third year. In 2007, I managed to write over 50,000 words in 30 days. In 2008, I came close (just over 42,000 words), but a combination of a late start and life-in-general prevented me from making it to 50,000. Still a win, though, all things considered. The Strange and Wonderful World of Catch 22

Currently reading:  Catch 22 by Joseph Heller Feeling :  Seriously amused    OMG, this book is made of win!  It is so completely, utterly, fantastically filled with a ridiculous number of colourful, silly, and seemingly endless adjectives and adverbs that it would make any editor cringe.  Or fall off his or her chair laughing.   And I love it!!! The characters (with names like Major Major Major Major [Major Major for short], Doc Daneeka, and Milo Minderbinder) are hilarious in their utter ridiculousness, which is compounded by the story's randomness and the "Catch 22" situations which had me wiping tears of mirth on multiple occasions.  It has a M*A*S*H  feel to it, mixed with the randomness of an episode of Seinfeld.  :D In writing news, it is  hard to craft a (good) story, with meaningful characters, in 4,000 words or fewer.  I am convinced I have too much story to fit within th...

A New YA Book and an Olde Play

Recent read:   The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan ♥ Feeling: Pretty Good A great read from this newly published author .  Sadly, I clicked on a link I shouldn't have, and got spoiled.  Boo.  My own fault.  Alas, the big twist at the end was not a surprise for me.   Still, I loved how she built up to the climax, how it unfolded, and how the main characters reacted.  Truth be told, I'd have been searching for the twist regardless.  (It's a curse I inherited from my mother.  We used to see which one of us could figure out who dunnit first.  Remember Perry Mason?  Yeah.)  I fell in love with the main character, Nick (dark and brooding ~ just my type) way back when Sarah posted the first chapter of The Demon's Lexicon online, and the rest of the book did not disappoint.  I felt as if I were there, immersed in the world, and to me that's the sign of a good novel.  I enjoyed getting to know ...
